He sometimes sits at his easel, and pretends he can paint. But the picture in his head never flows out into the strokes of his brush, the streaks of his paint. Perhaps he should have spent more time learning from Gros instead of pilfering apples. Or perhaps it is simply that what he desires most to paint cannot be captured by lesser mortals such as he.

R speedie I did on Friday night (during the internet blackout), 3-4 hours. Pic and drabble inspired by Abelarda's vignette (which was in turn inspired by Despard. Chain reaction haha). Will be scrapped at some point.

Those who know what this is about, know. Those who don't... eh, it's some butt-ugly guy who may or may not be getting any painting done.

Does it actually mention in the brick that R paints? I am slightly confused.

Actually, of all the Amis, Grantaire's list of abilities and interests is the most comprehensive! But yes, Grantaire mentions this himself in chapter 4 of "The Friends of the ABC": "For instance, I was always bright; when I was a pupil with Gros, instead of daubing pictures, I spent my time pilfering apples." Baron Antoine-Jean Gross was a real French history- and neoclassical painter and professor at École des Beaux Arts, who lived from 1771 to 1835. Just *how* proficient Grantaire actually was as an artist is subject to speculation, however! (he can't have spent *all* his time pilfering apples).

I love the colours in this picture, the very earthy, warm tones. A brush and a bottle might be (with a pen) the best weapons against the world :/ I love your Grantaire, his expression and posture are perfect. And I admit being very interested to read the vignette in question! Where can it be found, please? I'd very much like to read it :)
