Flying Out of the Sun by DarthFar Flying Out of the Sun by DarthFar
100 Pictures Challenge #89: Through the Fire. A bomber crew is caught off-guard by bogeys flying out of the sun.

I started this god knows how long ago, but stopped halfway and didn't get around to finishing it until my Great Internet Blackout. (No greater motivation for finishing pictures than a media blackout!). In case you're wondering why WWII bombers (read: B-17s) crop up in my gallery every two years or so... well, I never got over my childhood obsession with Flying Fortresses, or my ridiculous dream of flying them. Or any other plane, really. So every so often when the nostalgia returns I do something utterly pointless, like buy a Hamilton aviators' watch, or get Wings of Prey, or... paint airplanes.

[Admittedly, this picture was inspired by a single line from the movie, Memphis Belle: "Jesus, there's a hole in the pilot's window." Well, this particular one is obvious not in the *pilot*'s, but you see how this came about. LOL.]

Tech note: Plexiglass doesn't normally shatter unless you happen to hit it at a stress point, I believe. I guess the bogey was just lucky. You'll just have to suspend your belief, lol.

Does his jacket say Lucky Lady? X3 Every February some of the big WWII bombers and a Mustang come into Leesburg Intl Airport in Florida; visitors are allowed to ride in them for about 200 something dollars, and look around inside just for an entrance fee. Don't know if you knew that...you might have already been there, for all i know XD

Yes it does. :D

I've always wanted to go up in one of those WWII bombers (a Flying Fortress, preferably, but I'll take any of 'em!); alas, I don't live in the US - heck, I'm not even in a country that has WWII aircraft. So all I can do is ogle all those air show photographs online...

That is so cool! D: I'm obsessed with P-47 Thunderbolts and I so wish I could fly them today! Wrong century though, and even if I was in the right century, wrong gender! xD This is an absolutely amazing artwork, so much movement!

Oh yeah, fighter escorts! :highfive: I love British and German WWII fighters as well; always had a bit of a soft spot for the P-47s and ME Bf-109s myself. And pah, wrong gender - I believe quite a number of women were pilots during that era. ;)

Thanks!

Oh yes, that's what I want to do! The Spitfire and the Me-109's are a couple of my favorites haha. And yes, the WASP's! Unfortunately they didn't get to dogfight haha!

And you are welcome! :)

Can't say I share the love for the subject but... it just looks awesome. The clothing is wonderfully detailed and the cockpit is simply amazing. :wow:

Awesome, I love WW2 art. :)

Have you ever thought about getting your pilot's licence?

Thanks!

And I've always wanted to get a pilot's licence, but the fact that (A) lessons are pretty expensive and (B) I have problems with bright sunlight, and (C) my mother would launch a full-scale protest against it, means that I'm not likely to do so anytime soon. :hmm:

This is great! Love the movement and the colors! :)

I quite like WWII aviation. It fascinates me. One of my favorite books is my reprint of Identifying Aircraft.

Frickin' badass, I'm not into flying on planes much (heights!!) but I freakin' love everything from this era. (And I might not like flying, but I still think planes are pretty cool!) The world wars were fascinating and in this picture I really envy your skills at drawing that crazy instrument panel. I've seen a few of those and they definitely qualify under the catagory of 'ridiculously complicated.' Also love the colours and the high contrast. This is a fantastic piece. :)

...quite welcome, my friend. Certainly what draws me to your work is that you are an ILLUSTRATOR, not just an artist; your pictures always convey a story, a moment in time....I would rather look at a painting like "Flying Out of the Sun" than a landscape or a bowl of fruit. All of the artists that I admire are storytellers; I admire your work a lot....

Now you're just *tempting* me to draw a bowl of zombie fruit. :plotting:

But thank you very much, Ric. I won't compare landscapes and fruit bowls, but like you I do tend to prefer illustrations for the simple reason that they allow a glimpse into the mind of the artist and what they thought of something they read or heard, that inspired the resulting artwork.

This is so cool! I never cease to be amazed by your ability to take us right into a dramatic moment and keep us there for a while. I really like this one - and not just because I have this thing for pilots, although that might have something to do with it, and yes, before I looked at it properly I was thinking in terms of spaceships... :D Anyway! Great work on this one!

Thanks very much! :D [And haha, I know *all* about your penchant for pilots...] I'd really like to do an entire series on air battles, be it from inside or outside a plane, but that keeps getting lost in the sea of Other Stuff To Draw.

Thanks! As with most of my other paintings, the pencil drawing was A4 paper-size, scanned at 300 dpi and painted, with the finished picture resized to viewing size and tweaked a little before uploading. :)

Yeah, this one artist told me, back when I was first starting out, to paint everything as big as I can, because if you work big you can always scale it to something more reasonable later, whereas if you paint small but then decide you want to do details, you're done for. Have fun painting!

Wow...that poor fellow in the copilot position...he never saw it coming... Most excellent snapshot feel to this, Far: the canted angle, indicating the desperate attempt to evade the sudden attack, the frozen moment of horror in the gestures of the navigator and the copilot--the fighters streaming past the windshield tell it all, with the German cross on the fuselage... Just wow. Amazing detailing, from the clothing of the crew to the cockpit controls and the rivets around the windows...and the slew of spent bullet shells flying in the foreground, no doubt from a frantic gunner amidships trying to defend... We're pulled right into this, and it's awesome! Great job!

Thanks very much, FF! :D I love that fighter strategy of flying out of the sun, blinding the enemy as they swoop in, so it just had to be drawn somewhere. I intended for the crew member coming up to be the top turret gunner, haha, since his station is just behind the cockpit, but given the uniformity of their... uh, attire, I guess it could be anyone else as well!

OoooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooh... As always, I love it.

Coincidentally enough, apparently my grandfather serviced the Enola Gay; I found this out just the other day, my dad showed me some of the old pictures that my grandpa had from the war.

And Flying Fortresses, like bowties, are cool. :XD:

He was a mechanic on one of the south pacific islands, actually, not a pilot, so he did maintenance on her, as well as a few other flying fortresses. but flying a house from the porch sounds like a good analogy :XD:
