Forgotten Heroes of the RA by DarthFar Forgotten Heroes of the RA by DarthFar
So I'm a sucker for the Star Wars X-Wing series. I drew the lineart for this back in May last year as part of a series on the lesser-known/unsung/forgotten X-Wing heroes of the War... which, unfortunately, like half of my projects, never got off the ground. So it remained, forgotten, in a dusty folder for more than half a year -

- Until I found it again last week, when I was looking for existing lineart to use to test a new texture brush I made to simulate the effect of smear/smudge/add water blending, (when no such thing has taken place). I figured I'd toss some colours on Jek; I wound up doing that to *all* of them. Stranger things have happened.

NOTES

The lineup (Jek Porkins/ Cesi "Doc" Eirriss"/ Derek "Hobbie" Klivian/ Biggs Darklighter/ Wedge Antilles) is based on two comics: X-Wing: Rogue Squadron (1997; written by Michael Stackpole and Mike W. Barr) and Biggs Darklighter (2004; written by Paul Chadwick). The Hobbie here [obviously] isn't Stackpole/Allston's comic relief Hobbie "Bacta" Klivian, but Chadwick's cocky, slightly arrogant mutiny leader (and temporary captain) on the Rand Ecliptic, and one of the Rebel Alliance pilots who stole the X-Wings that would become the signature ship of the RA starfighter fleet.

Oh, and because somebody asked about this: Yes, Wedge *is* that short. (Okay, he was actually shorter than that, but I didn't want him to disappear off the page, LOL). He was described in some of the books as being 'under average height'; the Star Wars Essential Guide to Character lists his height as 1.70m. Biggs, on the other hand... While I don't know his exact height, I do know that he was over 6', and that he *towers* over Luke Skywalker, who stands at 1.72m.

And okay, so Hobbie and Wedge went on to star in more X-Wing comics/books... but you gotta admit they've been vastly overshadowed by other supporting characters. Ah heck. ;)

Characters created by George Lucas/Michael Stackpole.

Excellent work in showing the Forgotten Alliance heroes. I admire the style of art as well.
Although I disapprove of Alliance promotion (The obvious fact in the top right corner of this comment).
Then again I have tried ressurecting forgotten Imperials myself, such as Bevel Lemelisk and Colonel Wulff Yularen.
Great work anyway.

Thank you very much. :) I'm pretty much a big fan of Biggs and Hobbie; there just isn't enough representation of them over here, is there? LOL. And kudos on your treatment of the Imperials. Smaller characters deserve just as much appreciation.

They deserve it, but they don't recieve it!
Maybe they'll put these characters into action in the new Star Wars TV Series rumored to be filmed next year =).
:stormtrooper: Should be awesome! :stormtrooper:

I like the listing, though I think it lacks one important character (in my opinion he was important, anyways): Ton Phanan. I loved is joke-cracking personality and missed him through the rest of the books.

Thanks! I'd have to point out, though, that Phanan and Jek "Piggy" Porkins/Doc Eiriss did not belong in the same era: Porkins was wiped out in the Battle of Yavin, back when Luke Skywalker first joined; Phanan didn't come into the picture until Luke had taken over command of Rogue Squadron for some time, and then stepped down to be replaced by Wedge Antilles, who later formed Wraith Squadron. ;) Phanan's in my Wraith Squadron lineup picture, though, if you haven't already seen that one.

But yeah, I agree with you there: Phanan was one of the most memorable characters in the X-Wing series, and he deserves more fanart!

LOL, the Star Wars EU timeline has grown incredibly convoluted, hasn't it? I have trouble remembering when some of the event occurred as well.

What a terrific tribute to these "Forgotten Heroes!":clap: I love the backdrop, with the RA standard and a superbly difficult fighter maneuver with the ships (which all look wonderful--great detailing on each one!)--it's perfect for these hard-fighting starfighter pilots! I really like that this looks like a candid capture of them, as though they might have gathered for a caf and someone caught the holo...well done! Love it!

Not everything post-Endor is good, but I have a great love for anything X-Wing. You could always try Rogue Leader (it's the latest comic, but the 'first', chronologically) first, to see how you find it. :D

maybe I will, unfortunately my free time is becomming more and more limited, so my SW geekery will probably be limited to anything in the Revan timeframe..... ahhhhh my favorite...... btw, in the new SW book about the force, there is some very impressive artwork, including a very nice painting of Revan and Malak pre-redemption.... cool stuff.

Well, Wedge *is* a little better off: he has the Rogue and Wraith Squadron series, and he appears as a minor character in a number of other books and comics (including the graphic novel, Union). But yeah... there's far too much attention on Jedi and not enough on the pilots.

Thanks very much!

I love your X-Wing pics to bits :D

Only thing I would say is that, if it means anything, Denis Lawson is actually 1.73m tall. Don't know why the EGTC would shrink their heights (Mark Hamill is similarly 1.75m)
What height does the EGTC give Princess Leia, out of interest? ;) =P

And uh. I don't know either. Maybe to make him fit better in an X-Wing cockpit? Mind you, the only consistent thing about the EU is their inconsistency. ;)

The EGTC lists the following heights:
- Princess Leia: 1.5m
- Han Solo: 1.8m
- Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader: 1.85m/2.02m
- Chewbacca: 2.28m

You're welcome :D

Hmm, the other heights are about right (given the heights of the actual actors) - they made Vader and Chewbacca a bit taller, or perhaps there was a height difference in the costumes =P

Yay, flyboys! I really like this. They all look exactly like they should. I've read the RS comics, but I should probably invest in some early-Rebellion-era stuff. Especially now that the EU just keeps getting sillier and sillier. Damn those Jedi, I want my pilots back.

I like Star Wars best when it's uncomplicated. Good guys, bad guys, fight, good guys win, cheers. Then they decided to make it all deep and emotional and "dark" and it's not working for me at all! o_O

And yeah, they need to write more flyboy stuff. Failing that, I shall write it. Already started a few stories, so. :D

I know I'm going to get lynched for saying this, but your Wedge Antilles looks like Trek's Chekov.

Having said that, the overall design of the work is very striking. The X-Wings in the background, the Rebel Alliance symbol, and the characters and text are all positioned very well. Also, that is the first Twi'lek I have ever seen that I could actually describe as fairly good looking. All the others I've seen have made me want to vomit.

Thanks! And LOL, no worries. I *liked* the original Star Trek series. Admittedly, I don't actually do referencing when drawing stuff like this beyond checking the clothing design and colours and hair, so the people I draw tend to come out looking... I dunno, ambiguous.

And haha, yeah, I don't like most of the female Twi'leks I see in comic books either. My guess is that they're only attractive to male Twi'leks. ;)
