Speed Week 1: The Fool by DarthFar Speed Week 1: The Fool by DarthFar
:iconmaquaii: suggested that, since we both suffered from "Perfectdetailholism" and needed curing, we could do with a little loosening up, and challenged me to a Weekly Speedpaint.

Anyway...

When was the last time I painted anything to do with KotOR? October last year? It was no big deal, walking away from all of it. But recently I was talking to a couple of people about KotOR when I realised: I do actually miss this game. And I'm still quite fond of [link] for all its mistakes, although I've been imagining the showdown from different angles over the past few years. So hell, why not. ;)

~1.25 hrs. Two layers. Hard brush, Corel PP12.

Poor Atton...
He only wanted to say "something suitably heroic"...

Nice job, by the way. :salute:

I adore this. Though Atton's face isn't showing, I think you still show his character very well. Not exactly easy to do.

I cannot believe that I'm just getting to this. Very nice piece.

As you know I love the KoTOR time period, and KoTOR1 is probably my favorite game ever, and Revan is definitely my favorite fictional character...

but KoTOR2 could have been fantastic, instead of just very good. Lucas Arts (not Obsidian) really dropped the ball on this when the decided to rush the release.

Anyway, I liked Atton a lot, great supporting character. I really would love to see his reaction if the Exile and Revan ever did return for the great unknown.

Sorry for the tangent, Far. This is very well done, love the feel.

Join the club, Tom. I'm still getting around to replying to comments made five months back!

Anyway, glad you like this. (Atton's one of my favourite characters too). And yeah, KotOR2 could have been awesome if they hadn't rushed the release. I know Team Gizka was working to restore the cut content, but there hasn't been any news from that front in... half a year? so I'm not sure it's even going to happen anymore.

Ooo, awesome! I love the coloring and the swirl of Force around Sion. I just played that scene via the Restoration mod - finally! Still haven't played the "Atton dies" scenario though. :fear:

Wow, I'm totally in awe how well you capture this scene. The body language is just perfect and makes me instantly sorry for Atton. And the looming, menacing look on Sion really sells it.

What can I say that probably hasn't already been said!? With that said....I love the colors, the energy in this and the movement! But what really drew me in was the title "The Fool" I know nothing of these characters and yet you have managed to tie them into the Star Wars I know by using words that fit into Obi Wans quote and my most favorite quote of all...."Who is more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" Great artwork!

Thank you very much! :D The "fool" bit is actually taken from the conversation between Darth Sion and Atton (the actual cutscene is sadly removed from the game):

{[Cut to a scene of Sion's face, smiling.]}{[Sion advances through the halls. Atton comes to face him, looking a little sheepish. Darth Sion draws his blade against Atton.] }

Sion: And I get the fool.

Atton: Funny - that's just what I was thinking.

And you're right: several words and themes do keep recurring in Star Wars, don't they? :D One of my favourites being, "It's not my fault!" which occurred in every chapter of the classic trilogy.

I like the sense of motion in this one - I think the speed painterlyness really adds to that. There's also a really great atmosphere overall.

When I was doing my summer art courses my tutors were always telling me to relax more and not to worry about getting it perfect. Oddly that ended up helping my line art more than my painting I think. XD (One of their methods was forcing us to paint or draw badly by making us use sticks with charcoal taped to the end and so on. Then they stood back and watched while cackling evilly.)

YES! YESYESYES! :D It's been far too long. You know that I'm always for a collab with you. You come up with the story, and I'll illustrate the insanity. As usual.

(An idle thought that tickled my fancy: What is the crew of the Ebon Hawk doing, six years after TSL? Are they still scouring the galaxy for new adventures? Coming to terms with their pasts? Have they gone totally to pot? :giggle:)

This was such an interesting scene. Oh, Sion, so obsessed. Anyway, neat poses--Atton's facelessness suggests both no emotion and any possible one. I love the movement of the clothing too. Glad to see more KotOR from you!

Thanks! I already drew this scene, what, three years ago? but I've always wanted to revisit it.

I've never used any other brand of tablet but Wacom. Ironically, when I bought my first one, it wasn't for the purpose of drawing. My mouse had broken and, while shopping for a replacement, I saw tablets on sale, and thought, how much cooler would it be to use a pen instead of a mouse. (Although I later learnt the hard way it was terrible for gaming, and wound up buying a mouse after all). I wanted to get the Genius, since it was cheaper, but the salesperson told me I was better off with the Wacom. It lasted me 5 years, and it was only in the last year that I started drawing with it. I've been through a Graphire 2 and a Graphire 4 since (only switching when they broke); by the time I ruined my G4 the Graphire line had been discontinued so I was forced to get an Intuos 3 (6x8). I'm not complaining about it: I like it that it has three different types of nibs!

May I suggest you try using the mouse for navigating your computer in general, rather than just for painting? ;) I think you might get comfortable with it faster that way.

Far, let's all make one grand, huge comeback to KotOR! ;D A lot of people seem to be struggling with the same thoughts, kinda falling out of the fandom and then realizing they miss it.

I like how somewhat sketchy painting style in this actually gives it the feeling of speed, which, of course, is quite essential in a scene like this. Kinda like motion blur or something. :D Love it!

Well, do you know what Top Trumps are? It's basically a card game involving cards of various characters/vehicles/etc, on which are displayed their stats (like intelligence/dexterity/strength) on a scale of 1-10. Each card will have values for certain attributes that are higher than others, and lower for others. What you do in the game is, you pick up your top card, call out an attribute that you think you might have a chance of winning for, and everybody lays down their top card. If your value for that attribute is higher than everybody else's, you win the round. [I have fond memories of playing Ninja Turtles Top Trumps with my cousins.] Here's a wiki entry that might explain it better: [link]

I don't know if anybody still plays it anymore, but I figured it would make a cool deck, regardless. Either that, or a custom Pazaak deck with various characters on them.

Speedpaint is a great choice for a scene like this. The "sketchy" quality (in comparison with your usual work) really lets the emotion come through.
