The Quintessential Soldier by DarthFar The Quintessential Soldier by DarthFar
"Me, I'm the quintessential soldier who does his job very well. But what is that job? Two things: neutralizing Imperials and, the part I take most seriously, keeping my people alive. It doesn't matter if we were good or lucky out there today—and I'd rather the former than trust in the latter. What does matter is that we all survived, and that's as close to a miracle as I ever expect to see in my lifetime. The key thing to remember is that I can't trust in our luck or skill. I can't allow myself to believe we were that much better than the opposition and I can't let my people believe it. If they do, they'll die taking chances they should never take."
- Wedge Antilles, X-Wing: Rogue Squadron

"I am Wedge Antilles. I survived the Battle of Yavin. I survived the Battle of Hoth. Hell... Just a couple of weeks ago I blew up the Death Star during the Battle of Endor. The reason I'm still breathing when a lot of other good Rebel pilots aren't? Maybe it's because I'm better. Or maybe I'm just lucky."
Wedge Antilles, Lucky

For ^ArtisticAunJuli's Star Wars Fan Art Character Bonanza Day 14: Wedge Antilles.

I figured that people tackling Day 14 would probably draw Wedge of the classic trilogy, or of the X-Wing comicbook series, so I thought I'd do, instead, Wedge, more or less as he is now, in the Star Wars Expanded Universe timeline. Because, if you think about it, he's gone through about four decades of fighting, outliving not only most of the other minor characters, but some of the more major ones as well. I think it's pretty damn impressive for a character who had only a handful of lines in the original trilogy, and one that I didn't want to dismiss for the sake of drawing a younger, better looking Wedge. :)

Eh.

[No, that's not skin texture; that's my pencil layer, which I refused to get rid of.]

Oh, nice. Not everyday one sees a hero portrayed in 'old age', good of you to do something out of the ordinary. It's always interesting to see older depictions of fictitious characters - in this case I can see the resemblance to current-day Denis Lawson, and yet, he's different enough so that he still looks like Wedge and not just today's Denis Lawson in a Republic (or whatever galactic government they're up to these days x.x) uniform.

And this is why Wedge Antilles is an amazing character, and my personal favorite of the SW universe. Through everything he's been through and everything he's still in own words 'the quintessential soldier".

This is a most deserving of an :iconknuxwinplz: and a salute to your brilliance for capturing it.

For me, this artwork is perfect. So much love for such an amazing character. I admire how you summarized his story and life, you can see it all right there and feel so much nostalgia and love. I love Wedge so much, he is my absolutely favourite Star Wars character, every moment of reading about him is such a pleasure. I like how you've drawn that moment when he sees death of his parents realistically and still so close to that original picture. It's great seeing him as a pilot and as aged man. But I think he looks like himself a lot and I'd never doubt it is Wedge. There's so much in his eyes and in his whole expression, and I feel proud and happy that I was, so to say, a part of it too, I've seen something and felt something through books. My fan's joy is absolutely complete right now! Thank you for this feeling :aww: So much!

Oh please do! Janson is my favorite rogue out of all of them. I've drawn Wedge a couple times but NOT as good as yours ;p Well, I also like Biggs. I have an AU story on ff.net by my pen name Agent ERA about him surviving the first deathstar.

This is a perfect tribute. From a kid seeing his parents die in the fuel station explosion to an almost retired general. You've captured him very well, and it embodies those quotes too. Wedge is my favourite character and I have the books and comics of Rogue Squadron. And whenever someone in his team died, it was always such a hit for him.
Thank you for this.

Thank you very much! :D Wedge is probably the best developed of the minor trilogy characters, mostly thanks to Stackpole and Allston. (The Wraith Squadron books are epic).

You are welcome.
Denis Lawson was heard to say that he could not understand Wedge's appeal. I guess he never figured on North American cult status!
But can you imagine, being a British stage actor and getting the call from America.
"We need you back to play the pilot."
He almost didn't go one time, but it's nice that George always asked the same fellow to return.

I can't believe this has been sitting in my inbox for the past month and I never even... I mean, eeeee, it's WEDGE! I love it. Nice composition, I love how you show him at various points in his life. The distraught kid, the dutiful pilot, the dedicated general.

Yep, this is definitely going into my favourites folder. You've made this fangirl's day, for sure! :excited:

And although I understand many people never took to the EU, I'm personally glad to see someone else appreciates the achievements and history of the character, rather than just as the cool guy from the movie.

I'm most interested in the Imperials, honestly. If you ranked who I'm most interested in by broad categories, it would be something like Empire of the Hand > Stormtroopers(by Zahn) > Imperial Pilots and Officers > Leia(by Zahn) > New Republic Pilots > Jedi > Smuggler's Alliance > New Republic Commandoes and Politicians > Everyone Else > Mandalorians(by anyone but Stover).

Yes! Good to see you're still around and improving, Far.

This is an excellent piece of artwork; well composed and beautifully rendered. And I, too, like that you've chosen to depict Wedge at different stages of his life.

A couple of questions though. The older Wedge doesn'resemble the older Denis Lawson very much. It's a wonderfully expressive portrait of an ageing soldier, who's seen a lot of death. However, I'd never had guessed it was Wedge. Was there a reason for not making the portrait resemble the actor more ?

And the full-length pilot picture - very well done and expressive posture, but that's not Wedge's helmet design. The dark green panels make his helmet very distinctive.

But as I said before, you are a talented artist.

Hi there, thank you very much for your feedback. :) Basically, I wasn't so much thinking in terms of "Denis Lawson as Wedge Antilles", as "Wedge Antilles who kinda looks like Lawson, but also like all the portrayals of Wedge in the comicbooks and book covers (which actually range from very-Wedge to nothing-like-Wedge)". So while I did base the drawing on a photo of Lawson from Jekyll and Hyde (I rotated the head angle, but aside from his eyes sitting a little higher, it's not that far off either, for something that was neither gridded nor measured, lol; I changed the hair to be a shorter version of comic Wedge's, rather than Lawson's, though), I wasn't all too concerned about being too accurate either, y'know?

And - crap, green panels on his helmet? :dohtwo: I'll go back and change that then. Thanks!

Very well done! And definitely outside the box. I often wonder about what happens to heroes when the stories are over. I mean, it's not always "happily ever after". What about messy divorces, screaming kids, mortgages, lumbago, etc?
So this is refreshing as well as interesting. The expression on his face is one of someone who has seen too many battles, lost too many friends, seen more of space than he'd like to, and has perhaps retired to a small cottage on Lamuella. Surrounded by farmland, a couple Arcturian Mega-Donkeys, and able to watch the Perfectly Normal Beasts' bi-annual migration from his front porch, he sighs with content while whittling an X-Wing from balsa wood.
Yeah, I'm mixing space stories. Hey, at least I didn't add in tribbles and androids with groin attachments.

Oh, fantastic. Did he mature past his dislike for dress uniforms, then? ;)

This begs a piece with Older Wiser Tycho, Hobbie and Wes, though, really. Four older, war-torn but still dignified (except for Wes) pilots, talking about whippersnappers and bulging a little at their jumpsuits' waistlines. Tinkering on old X-wings or sitting on a workbench. NO rockers for these elderly flyguys.
