... Okay, so my art ideas are taking a somewhat morbid turn, LOL. It was something that I just drew at the spur of the moment in an attempt to do interior background and props although, now that I look at it, it might have been subconsciously inspired by Tom Lehrer's I Hold Your Hand in Mine, given that it was a song I used to hum in the shower. The colours and contrast came out weird; it didn't look like that when I was painting it on Corel PhotoPaint (damn you PP). The fact that PP tends to screw up colour balance and brightness/contrast should be reason enough for me to start learning Corel Painter - but I'm a lazy freak of the worst sort.
I have no idea who that's supposed to be, although I have a sneaking suspicion that it *might* be The Stranger.
EDIT: Guy now has a name. Stephen Garrity. And he has motivation. Be warned.
(NOTE: The person who previewed this asked me if the arrangement of the books and papers bothered me, given that my own books have to be properly aligned on the shelf. Well, the answer is - yes. A lot. A frikkin' lot).
Well uh, the person would have to be sort of twisted to begin with, wouldn't they? I mean, dismemberment takes more work than one would think. And then there's the matter of getting vats of concentrated sulphuri... um, never mind.
Er, I like it. Really nice paint job, even if the color balance came out skewed (I couldn't tell.) I'm trying to imagine what the skull would look like with a face--that's one large nasal cavity. The skull and his expression look great, but I think my favorite bit is the teddy bear on the shelf amidst the dubious specimen jars.
Haha, thanks. A very interesting response there; are you by any chance fascinated by all things macabre? And aheheh, the teddy bear on the shelf is testament to my strange sense of humour. I think.
Uh, the nasal cavity is supposed to have corroded quite a bit (alongside other - less severe - damage to the bone); I guess it didn't show up very well. Maybe I should have made the edges more jagged or something.
we need to get this guy to the hospital!!!! he is talking about LOVE!
hehe very nice, there is another thing too far, she has to be alive....
deep inside we all look the same? you know if that was true, then eveyones faces would be very much alike

You just keep getting better and better with every new submission, even though your earlier work has been pretty smashing to begin with. I can't believe the amount of details in this, just look at the skull, the candles, all the stuff on the shelves, and the jars with their slightly morbid contents... I think you really have found a fine balance between realism and subtle cartoon-style simplification in here. This is just a lovely picture in a fantastically freaky way!
Btw, how long did it take you to colour this? I would have struggled with something like this for ages considering the amount of detail and the softness of shading.
Thanks, JJ. Uh, let's see, I drew it on the evening of the 12th and scanned it in. Laid on the base colours for everything except for the skull because by that time it was about midnight, and I didn't want to start on it when I was half asleep. Instead, I did shading for the guy, and then went to bed. Worked on the picture for about an hour at breakfast the next day, then went out. Resumed painting it after a late dinner; more or less finished it at 12 something to 1. So yeah, however many hours that is; I didn't exactly time myself. The time-consuming part was all the small stuff with individual colours: the books (not two of them are the same colour), the perfume bottles and formalin jars, and the stupid feather because I couldn't decide on a colour for it (it went from bright pink to purple to blue and green before ending up... whatever colour it currently is). Oh and yeah, the bloody perspective almost killed me. I never learnt perspectives in school, so now I'm paying for it through the nose.
And hahaha softness of shading - I just do stuff in multiple layers, slap on shading any which way - and erase the excess.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
