It's been a long time since I uploaded one of these, and since my attitude towards some of the aspects of painting portraits has changed more than a little since, I thought that this might serve as a decent supplement to the Ten Points from Gryffindor tutorial. However, while TPfG was written as a sort of step-by-step guide to painting portraiture, this is more of a general discourse on how to approach the painting (sort of a "why I'm doing this-and-that"), and I've tried to keep overlaps to a minimum. So if you want to know what brush I use where (mostly hard brushes set to high spacing), why I hate soft brushes and smudging, or why on earth there's purple in my palette, I'd suggest you go read TPfG - if you haven't already. ;)

Please bear in mind, however, that, being self-trained, I'm probably not the best person to offer *any* of the above advice - so if any of it is misleading or downright wrong: I will not take responsibility! ROFL.

Excellent walkthrough! I am so fav-ing the hell out of this!! Pretty sure this applies to 'real' painting too, not just digital. With the disadvantage of 'no CTRL Z'.
Lots of opaque layers give a much better glow/realistic result that a few less opaque ones.

Thanks! for some reason your comment conjured up images of you whopping the picture with a large baseball bat bearing the word "+FAV!!".

You're right about it working both digitally and traditionally: I actually started using many thin layers of paint after I read what this guy who did oil painting (Hank1, I think) said about getting the skin to glow through the application of many, many glazes. And for me, the advantage of digital media having a CTRL+Z option is offset by the sheer inability to rotate your "paper" to a more comfortable position (unless you have a Cintiq) and less steady strokes. The books pretty much balance!
