I received an awesome 24-piece tin of Derwent charcoal pencils from my family for my birthday. [One of those things I'd always coveted, but could never justify buying.] So since I've never done a charcoal portrait (kind of hard to do one, if you don't have charcoal...), I thought I'd try it for once.
The subject is Damon Albarn of Blur, whose songs I had listened to throughout my years in school, and the title is derived from Fools' Day, the first song they'd recorded together after their split. Guess I was feeling nostalgic? The first time I heard the song, it was strange how touchingly, mundanely, grown-up the lyrics were - until I realised that over seven years had passed, and people had grown up or grown old(er). Just one of those things you never quite notice for a long time until it suddenly hits you. LOL.

Notice the smudges around the edges! I'd have cleaned it up, but.... nah. I'm ok with people seeing how horribly messy I am.
Awesome, it looks pretty neat for a charcoal portrait! Anyway, how does it feel to work with charcoal? Is it easy? I've always been really curious about it, but like you, I've never really thought it was worth buying...
It's just gorgeous: as realistic as a b/w photo--the breaths of color are wonderful, and beautifully subtle; the only thing that gives this away as a drawing is the framing (where we see the stray pencil strokes and smudges outside the lines) and the sweep of your sig on his shirt collar...so subtley done! The eyes are positively hypnotic...I can't stop staring at them... Beautiful work, my friend!
Thanks very much, FF! It's fun experimenting with new media, even more so when the picture comes out midway decent. Not quite there yet in terms of realism, but I'd like to push it further if I get around to doing another charcoal portrait in the future.
And yes, Albarn has rather hypnotic eyes that draw you in!
